“NEW YORK, NY, August 23, 2017— The Studio Museum in Harlem today named nineteen artists to be featured in Fictions, the fifth in the Museum’s signature “F-show” series of emerging artist exhibitions. Hailing from across the United States, the artists in Fictions engage with a variety of media—including video, photography, painting, drawing, sculpture, and installation—as they investigate the complexities of the contemporary moment.

This exhibition, curated by Kayleigh Bryant-Greenwell, engages with a legacy of black art spanning over 50 years through nine exciting contemporary visionaries.  This collective body of work reflects on the black experience as artists and as Americans. Artists Holly Bass, Allana Clarke, Wesley Clark, Billy Colbert, Larry Cook, Jamea Richmond Edwards, Amber Robles-Gordon, Stanley Squirewell and Stephanie Williams create their work using a variety of media, style and technique.  

In 1965, Spiral was a group of black artists who gathered as a collective and held a single exhibition May 14 – June 15, 1965. The collective considered the question, "What does it mean to be a black artist?"  Spiral, Recoil continues to examine...
